We are located in Cove, Pennsylvania, with about 200 feet of our property bordered by the Susquehanna River. Over 6 years ago, we began the clean-up and restoration of this area, and the results are clear today. We encouraged the native wild species of plants after we removed the trash, scrap metal, glass, and rubble that had accumulated over the years of being ignored and abused.

Today, we commonly see Bald Eagles, Egrets, Blue Herons, and all manner of waterfowl in the river. Song birds, Woodpeckers, Squirrels, and Rabbits are also frequent visitors. There have been times when White-tailed Deer have swam across the river to come to rest on the bank. Butterflies and bees are constantly travelling through and display the amount of life that exists in this place. Turtles leave the river to lay eggs in the soft dirt away from the banks, and their path is now clean and clear again.

The impact of cleaning and removing excessive human interference was almost immediately apparent. The plants became healthier, and the unwanted bugs dwindled in number. Sightings of nesting geese, groundhogs, and baby turtles the size of a half dollar became increasingly common. A resident Fox made an appearance, and the presence of mice dropped dramatically in the following weeks.

While some may call this a “little slice of heaven”, we refer to it as our “Little slice of Stewardship”. The beauty we get to enjoy comes at the price of stewardship. We are constantly reminded that we are a speck that is a part of the longest river on the East Coast of the United States, and everything we see flow by in the current has come a long way, and like every watershed, ends up in the ocean. We do our part to remove trash from the river and make the waterway cleaner for everyone. This is one way we give back to the next generations.
